Just got done my overdue exhaust mod, I went to a local muffler shop with my old 22re exhaust and asked them to bend up a 2 1/4" to match, I had to weld the Y pipe that connects to the manifold to the pipe myself. cost $51.00 then I got a Hi Flow CAT for $100.00 added my exhausting Cherry Bomb. Now I hold steady at 110 KPH on the highway. even past a transport going uphill on my way from River Glade to Freddy Beach with a MX bike in the bed. used to hope for 90 KPH on those hills. note the truck does not feel peppier but it does hold its top end

i have a queistion to this message... i have a 22-re and i ve got a header.. and a flowmaster.. Would it do better with 2 1/4 inch pipe rather then the 2 1/2in piipe i got right now?? i do have 33 in. tires but i have a hard time holding 5th... and if i do.. it luges the engine more then i would like....

Most likely. Too free a flowwing exhaust will reduce backpressure too much. And 4 bangers need some backpressure.

Running 33" tires would be the 5th gear problem. Gears would be the answer. $.88's would make all the difference in the world.

backpressure is always bad but so is exhaust cooling to fast and not flowing out fast enough to help pull out more. So you dont want back pressure but it comes with a good exhaust set up

hey, i heard that headers are a bad idea cause of over heating and warping. has anyone had headers for like 2 years or more that would know if this is true? i want to put one on my 85 4runner with a 22re.

Out of boredom the other day I set up a new exhaust as well, using a ford 460 exhaust manifold and some old tubing. Straight out the cat into a few bends and in the collector/outlet side of the manifold. The manifold mounted along the frame rail with inlet ports running along the frame. Sounds wicked, cheap, and def hillbilly fab!

Open up your exhaust if you want to cruise 3,000 rpm or up,keep some back pressure if you want to keep power for pullin down on long grades. Opened mine up to 2 1/4 from EMPTY CAT back with Cherry bomb, rolls on above 2,500-3,000 but won't pull down like it did before. So I guess it is a trade off unless some one has a suggestion to get back my low end power (Which I would love to Hear!!!!! Papa's Toy needs some help!!

A Long Tube header, 2.25" collector and straight pipe leading to a Borla or Magnaflow straight through muffler, then about 2-4 feet of tubing. That would make good low end and open up the top end. The problem with the empty cat is that the exhaust comes down the tubing under pressure. When that pressure hits the empty shell it expands into it causing the exhaust to slow down. The next pulse hits that last slower pulse and the system backs up. The cherry bomb is basically straight pipe, there is no backpressure at the bottom end. The Borla or Magnaflow does the same thing your empty cat is doing, causing backpressure exactly the same way, except that the backpressure goes away at the top end. As the rpm's increase the exhaust is no longer traveling through the system in pulses, it's a steady flow. As that steady flow pressurizes the canister of the muffler the exhaust no longer expands into the muffler, it just blows out the back giving you top end. Make sure not to oversize the primaries on your headers. 1.5" would build bottom end torque yet be opened up much more than a stock manifold. 1 5/8 primaries would work but you would probably still have bottom end loss problem. Put as little bends in the system as possible.
