Just found out the hard way on my buddy's Taco. We had put on a Safari Snorkel, and had also gone thru the engine and sealed everything we could think of with silcone for extra protection. Here's the catch that we figured out recently... IF your exhaust is below the waterline(as his was), and your engine speed isn't high enough(his was idling), and the water is up to the top of your exhaust header, water can, and more importantly will get into your engine and kill it!

Damn speedy that sucks. Yep and he should've kept the RPM's over 2k + to keep the water out of the exhaust system until extracted or just shut it down. Then after being extracted remove the plugs blow out the cylinders and exhuast system. Is your friends tacoma a 4 or 6cyl?

It's a 2.7L. He knew better once it died than to try to start it, but he did anyways. We haven't torn it down yet but we are pretty sure it cracked a valve/valve stem, and or a connecting rod. A crying shame after 160,000 problem free miles on it. Not to mention the water level was to the bottom of his seat so the entire carpet set will have to be removed. He saw some guys in ATV's crossing a mud pit so he tried, went a little too far to the left and boom. Turns out after refering to some other photos of the land at Shiloh Ridge, he was hitting a full on purpose built mud pit for mud races, except he hit it perpendicular to the intended direction. The water was too high and muddy to see it. I doubt I will ever let him forget how I winched out his broken 97 with my beat up 83, then towed him back to camp up some steep trails!!

I killed my 94's 1st motor in 3' of water. It stalled..... Water coming in the open window's. I kept it rev'd, but the intake was too low.... Now... Clean out the diff's, the tranny, the transfer case. Anything you thought was sealed.
It'll suck water into EVERYTHING.
Sorry, but the motor is the obvious thing.

Gotcha Stew, fluids are on the list for sure. We got it started last night after pulling it because the starter is fried. We figured we might as well try before we pulled the engine. Alternator is froze so after replacing that we might not be so bad off.
