i have a 99 taco. i want to run 33x12.50"s tires. i wanted to know what size rim i should run my guess would be 15x10 i dont know about the offset. also i've heard that i cant run a aftermarket 15 inch rim b/c of a problem of the rim rubbing the caliper. this is third hand info so i dont know if the guy knew what he was talking about. i thouhgt i would ask better safe that sorry.

Personally I would stick with a 8" wide rim. It will keep the rim from rubbing on rocks and crap. I don't have a taco so have no idea about the rubbing. Stock backspacing should be 3.75".

Yes, I run 36-12.50s on 8" rims and 33-12.50s on 8" rims.

Yes, the point is the small rim with the larger tire will hide the rim from damage on the trail as well as make a stronger holding bead.

I looking into getting tires soon and will need wheels as well. So the narrower (8") wheel is protected and has a stronger holding beed... Are there any differences in tire performace or ware between a 8" wide and 10" wide wheel? (I am also planning on running 33x12.50's)

A wide tire on a narrow rim will wear the center tread more than on a wider rim. You could run real low pressure to kind of even it out, but then that causes other wear issues. Like everything, it's a trade off. Do you want best mileage onroad, or better bead retention offroad?
