i have a 95 4runner and looking to put bigger tires ... i was going for 31x10.5 bfg m/t but then i saw some 31x12.5 tires and wondered if they would fit without doing any lifting....would it work???

they'll rub a bit, but WHO CARES?!?!?! It'd look tight!

it would look good , rub good and if you ran them on 7" wide wheels the center of the tires would wear really good i would stay with a 10.50 or go with a 2" lift and 8 or wider wheels

I see no real advantage to the 12.5 over the 10.5 so I would go with the 10.5 to avoid rubbage like greenhead is saying.

I also agree, I tried to the same thing that you're talking about and it backfired bigtime. Save yourself a lot of time and money and stick with the 10.5 on an 8" rim.
