I was wondering what everyone thought about narrow tires compared to wide tires. Just for discussion lets say a 33x9.5 and 33x12. I can see advantages and disadvantages for both. A narrow tire might dig through to the bottom better and cause less drag in mud and snow, but a wider tire has more surface area for traction and could also float over/through stuff better, what do you guy's think?

I prefer a narrow tire a) when I know there is a bottom(mud/trails) b) on snow/ice(when I know there is a bottom) It has a higher contact pressure.
I prefer a wide tire a) when I don't know the terrain. b) when I know I need floatation.
I have always run wide tires as the default. I do NO rock crawling. Just trail and muddy trails. Only problem with a 4:10 geared 22re? Doesn't have the nuts to spin the 33x12'5 enough to stay on top.( I take mud fast and hard w/the 94 pu) Momentum=success(making it through) I run muddy trails in 4low 2nd or 3rd gear.
JUST MY OPINION Actually, the last narrows I ran were on a 72 chev logging truck, they were a snow/mud 16'' tire with 10ply E-rating. Cheap and worked.

wide for what i do which is deep snow and rocks. in deep snow a skinny tire wont float like a 15 inch wide tire at 3 psi and in rocks well thats the tire i use cuz thats what i have

A narrow tire should give you better gas mileage on the highway when not offroad. Just my .02

And on a dry surface, I wonder if a narrower tire with greater downward pressure per smaller area or a wide tire with less downward pressure on a greater area would be better. Probably just depends on the surface. If loose, I could see that wide would be better. In any case, I do mostly trail driving with mixed conditions and prefer a narrow tire.

I like wider tires for all wheeling no matter the surface. I like to stay on top. Narrow tires in snow and mud I feel dig down to the surface thus make more snow or mud to push out of the way if not high centering you depending on depth of muck and height of rig.
Narrow tire are good on the street for better gas mileage and cuz the wider the tire is the more it will grab on corners. Too much grab will make the rear-end hop or if you're too top heavy maybe even roll.

It's possible to make both work for whatever you're doing. It just takes different ways of driving. I have a 12.5's because otherwise my truck would look like a sissy.

Narrow tires will dig to the bottom, only problem is there sometime might not be a bottom . . . Let some air out to grab more traction and air back up before you travel far!
