I have a 1993 Civic, and while trying to fix the electrical problem in it the other day my father said that this engine has a Hemispherical shape. So really the Civic has a "Hemi". So when some jerk pulls up to me in his brand new Dodge thinking he's all cool, I'll ask him if it's got a Hemi, and say so does mine. By the way, my Civic is not one of those "Rice Rockets" out there. It's a four door with a bike rack on top, so that shows you I am anti-rice burner

Way to go as far as the anti-rice rocket. I was always heard that a hemi refers to the hemi-domed pistons in the engine, im not sure about your civic but i do know the older 80's Toy pickups had hemi-dome pistons.

It's not the shape of the engine that makes it a "hemi", it's the shape of the portion of the head above the cylinders. It's hemispherical combustion chamber. Mid 70's Corollas (2TC engine I think) had cross flow hemis. I'm sure a whole lot of others too.
