I have been thinking a lot about modifing a radar detector. I do not see any reason why the entire unit needs to be in the windshield. There has got to be a way to modify one to where the sensor is only in the windshield/or somewhere else on your truck, and have the proper wiring going to the unit, somewhere else in the cab. (Cops look for them, and they are not legal to have in California). Has anyone tried to do this? I would think it would be possible, but i might be wrong. Any comments or ideas would be great!

Your thinking in the right direction but... It has been done. There are models you can get that mount up under the bumper or in the air dam somewhere on your car and then you mount the LED cluster on the dash to show you incoming info. Unfortunately just having it hidden isn't going to keep the cops off your back if your not supposed to have one in some states. They have radar detector detectors believe it or not. The oscillator in the radar detector that finds the incoming signal also has a tendency to leak, which is what the cops find by using a radar detector detector...funny. Most of those detectors are called VG2's. There are some stealth radar detectors that are supposed to have low leaking oscillators and some that even sniff for VG2's and shut down if they sense one nearby. Crazy. If your still interested check out the Valentine One and also Bel radar detectors. They should have what your looking for. For what its worth, my Dad runs a radar detector on his bike with the detector in the air dam and the LEDs up near his field of vision on the windshield. I just drive slow..but a little crazy.

As far as I know, they are still legal in CA as amazing as that may seem to be..... something legal.... In California? ;D
I had an old friend of mine that went into doing electronics and made a radar scrambler. It basically scrambled the radar and made it read about 10mph lower then what you were going. It was small and hooked up to your stereo antenna to look like a FM booster. Never had a chance to try it out though. Didn't really need it cuz I think if your got pulled over in the first place then you just weren't driving fast enough to begin with.

They do have radar jammers that send a duplicate signal back at the radar gun which adds noise and keeps them fron getting a reading. However this product is illegal in all states according to the FCC since it causes interference to another legal device. I remember reading a Car and Driver magazine when I was a kid about a Corvette that had a radar jammer, frequency scanner, radar detector, lincense plate switch (for multiple plates), rear light switch which changed the tail light configuration, and was blacked out in all ways. Of course it was porabably used to traffic drugs at night, but still made me want one.

I didnt know that they were legal in Califonia. News to me. I know people that have them in their cars and they swear they are illegal. I guess i could always call the highway patrol office or somthing. Doing some research on the web, i came across this website. www.speedzones.com/Has almost everything you need to know about radar detectors. They test the best detectors, and rate them in a lot of different areas.

Radar detector are illegal for truckers to use by federal law. That's mainly what the radar detector detectors are used for. One time I was talking to a cop on my ham radio and he said one time they had to dis-assemble the front of a semi to find where the guy had hidden a remote mount detector.

go cordless with the escort model, i hide it up where my tint strip is and cops cant see it, works fine too, no wires hanging down, i like it cause in virginia they look for the wires, thankfully i only had to drive through that state two or four times a month, cops there are everywhere
