It seems that my truck needs to warm up before it shifts smoothly without grinding in reverse. Is that normal? After a minute of the truck being on it shifts fine, including reverse.

Well I know that in the winter before I go driving i put my transfer case in neutral and put my tranny in 3rd and that warms it up so that it shifts smoothly. I think i remember you saying a while back that you had a 2wd though and that wouldnt have a transfer case in it. When you put the trans case in neutral and put the tranny in 3rd or whatever you want it moves the gears in the tranny and warms up the oil a bit. I know that sometimes when i first start my truck when its really cold out( below -30) i cant even let the clutch out in neutral at the start or else it will stall the engine and to let the clutch out i have to let the engine warm up for a while first. And then when i go to drive away you can hear all the axles snapping loose or something like that haha.

Well I think its also possible that my problems stems from the clutch itself because it needs to be ajusted slightly. I believe my clutch is nut and bolt though, so theres not much I can do for adjustment. Another possible cause for the grinding also might lie in my shifting. For a while I threw the shifter too far to the right when I needed reverse. I've broke that habbit and it reduces the grinding. All I know is once the trucks warmed up, reverse is fine.

Your older tranny doesn't have the "thing" in it. I can't remember the name, but it slows the main shaft for shifting. Synchro's I believe. The NP435 has the same issue, just a massively larger tranny. Your best bet is any required clutch adjustment and letting the mainshaft slow before shifting into reverse. Cold lube will have an effect too. Does your truck idle high? I mean like above 700? Doesn't sound like much, but when cold, it'll do this too. Stew

the tranny has syncros they are prolly worn. unlike the np465 or 435 that has no syncro for first gear

My truck idles high at first before the choke is engaged (or after I'm not sure) but its when I first fire it up. I dont have a tac meter in my dash cluster so I couldnt tell you what RPM it was at but after about 2-3 minutes the engine quites down. Now that I think about it, the truck grinds most in reverse when its only been on for a few short minutes.
