Good question, it's a new feature.
Karma provides the ablility for other members to "rate" you and your responses. Under the Karma points, you can either "Exalt" or "Smite" someone. The more karma you have, the more "popular" you are. Exalt adds a point, smite removes one.
Simple. Kinda silly, but simple. Global Mods all started with 100, and the admin (me) started with 500.
