I've got an 82' p/u with 260,000 miles. I've been spending about $26.00 at the pump to fill her completly up with premium. I'm spending $6 more to fill my tank with higher octane gas but the truck runs noticably better. Because I'm getting better performance out of my engine the fuel economy of the truck should be better. I was wondering if I'm losing any money by buying premium instead of unleaded (taking in consideration the better fuel consumption).
Also does anyone know about what size fuel tank my truck has. I'd estimate it to be about 15 gallons.

Articles I've read in car and truck magazines say theer is nothing to gain from running premium if the vehicle was designed for regular. I think that applies more to EFI engines that can detect and respond/compensate for any air/fuel changes that deviate from what is programmed into the ECM. Carbed engines are limited in what the ECM can do. If you feel an improvement, go for it. Although MPG may suffer as you will probably want to take advantage of the increased power by using the accelerator pedal more.

I have also seen articles stating that running high octane in a vehicle that is designed to run reg fuel will cause the internal parts like valve sleeves for instance to wear out way before they should the higher octane burns hotter than reg and the parts weren't designed to take the added heat. still looking into it though
