Well the other night I was going home from 89cciroc's house and there was no one behind me and just like that I had someone so far up my rear I actually turned off my headlights(only for a few seconds) and was using there's to drive by. All I could see in my mirrors was the glare coming from the taillights. I gave several brake taps to warn them off but they started to play games by swirving back and forth among other stupid stuff. they weren't going anywhere there were 2 other people in front of me. Well after about 10 min of this stupidity. I finally just yanked the e-brake. This person was in the middle of one of these dumb moves and well at 50+MPH I heard tires squealing headlights going one direction to the other and when I checked my mirrors I got to watch them slam into the inbankment and the rearend go about 3 feet in the air. I wish I still had the fog lights hooked like I used to have but oh well. I'll bet they never tail gate anyone again.

RE: Tailgaters suck; I sure do sympathise with you, but ummmm...is that legal in your state? Just don't get caught. That is not a manoever they teach in drive's ed...but then neither is tailgating. You sure you want to post this on a website? The Gov't can read everything we post (Internet monitoring-part of Homeland Security).

I like that. Ive wanted to do that lots of times. Always hoped someone would brake in front of me so i could slam the brakes on and watch them smash the front of their car up on my bumper. It wouldnt hurt my truck at all except for scratch the paint on the bumper. Sure would be fun to watch though.

You threaten my safety I'm taking action it's that simple it's not like our vehicles hit each other and this state doesn't have driver's ed. you only have to have x-amount of hours with a learner's permit &Why? It's the states fault for not teaching these idiots how to drive. And I could care less whether the Gov't reads it or not!

;D Just a "preface": Philly's known as one of the worst towns to drive in. It's true, believe me, I live here! Brake checks are a regular part of a drive. Seems like somebody failed one! ;D Later...

Hoodlum = Terrorist? Yeah I highly doubt the powers that be are going to read this post, call the local authorities and send a squad out to Hoodlums house for pulling his e-brake. They have a few other things to do I think (seething sarcasm in this thread - beware). This reminds me of the time a guy ran into the side of my truck since he wasn't paying attention. Toyota 1 - Isuzu 0. His bumper was on the ground and I had a scratch on the slider. I looked at his and looked at mine and knew he was far off worse than mine so we were square. While I don't condone pulling e-brakes on someone (around here it is called country justice), there are also a lot of other circumstances that one might not be aware. A). We all screw up, sometimes we get caught and sometimes we don't. B). Sometimes the idiot behind you turns out to be a 85 year old lady having having a bad day or some idiot who is pissed about losing his job and can't see past his rage. Or sometimes it is some kid being an a$$ hole. Whatever it is, keeping a cool head and clear thinking is recommended. You never know how the outcome might come back to haunt you (see point A). Hood glad to see you are ok. I get pissed when I'm riding with my wife and two sons and someone is driving reckless around us. They just don't see the life inside the vehicles. Oh and you better NOT put my sweet bumper I sold you in harms way. There would be reckoning to pay!!

LOL it's all good the bumper is safe(well for the moment anyway). Is trail damage acceptable? ;D

it would have been lame if when you pulled your E-brake they were totally caught off guard and smashed into you and you all died from the wreck. haha I can relate though, I always think of doing this exact thing when someone is tailgating me. Instead I pull off to the side and let them pass so I can get behind and then I usually pass them going mach 3 as close as I can to their car....just to give em a little scare.

Dont sweat the small stuff.
As far as yanking the brake being illegal i cant imagine why. The person following is responsible to allow enough space to be able to brake in a panic situation. If you were to make a panic stop and they rearended you, they would be at fault. Screw em if they cant take a joke.

Good to know this is one place we're not being watched/listened to. Up round here there's waaaay too much gov't sticking their noses up everyone's tailpipe. The feds are worried about un-American activities around here? I live about 100 miles from civilization...gimmee a break! These days, before you can spit, someone's suing my ass or throwing me in jail for having an opinion (and being dumb enough to actually voice it). Far as tailgaters go... I got pulled over and nearly arrested for doing a brake check. It seems that in my state the law protects the butthole who's tailgating! I was forced to take a 'safe driving' class. Seems that checking my brakes was 'agressive driving'. The moral of the story is...don't get caught.

Once the judge understood you were breaking because a squirrel ran out in front of your car *wink wink nudge nudge* the charge would have likely been squashed.

Damn! I should have thought of that. Next time I have to stand on my brakes because of an "animal", and a cop gets mad, I'll make that point clear.

When I lived in the sticks, people used to like to come up behind me and hold their bright's on to force me off the road because I was only going 10-15mph over the legal limit. They knew they could get away with it since I couldn't flash them back. I started carrying a 2 million candle power hand held spot light on board. I had one guy that just wanted to be a jerk behind me, didn't pass me when I hit the shoulder but kept his brights on. I pulled out my trusty spot light and gave him some of his own medicine. The guy ran off the road into a field! No one was hurt and nothing was damaged, but I think he got the point, or maybe he just saw the light! I say the tailgater knew better and had no excuse for doing what he did and deserved what he got. I am glad you didn't get hurt Hoodlum!

I like Speedy's idea. Install 2 55W aux backup floodlights-- 2 flashes from these lights should give tailgaters the message! NYS traffic law doesn't consider a 'warning flash' to be agressive driving! ;D BTW-I appologize if anyone felt criticized. Guess my tone was out of line. I'm not calling anyone a terrorist; it's good to give tailgaters lessons in manners; I don't mean anything negative about TOR or TOR members. IMHO Gov't security measures are sometimes over zellous.-LOL. I know Gov't isn't interested in what we say on this site. What's more American than 4-wheeling?

I get tailgated alot going home because it is mostly up hill and you all know how 22r's just rip up hills at 70! And the best thing i have found is the closer or angrier they get the slower i get. the more they back off the faster i try to go. I had this one guy in a blinged out suburban behind me and he was HOT man! i mean head out the window, finger in the air hand on the horn MAD!(side note, the hiway i drive home is a curvy 2lane double yello for quite a while and nowhere to past). I got down to about 25mph and just ignored the horn. really great way to stay safe and put em in there place

Dude, you really should have your fogs still hooked up. I had to put some aftermarket lights on my license plate when I built my rear bumper. So when people are tailgating me, I just swith from the license light to my underside fogs that are not visible. Either that or I once saw a vehicle that had rewired the reverse lights so that he just had to flip a switch and POW there they were. That would scare the shit out of the tailgater. Good Idea huh,
Scott

I dont think id ever go so far as to yank the ebrake, but my other fave trick are hitting the brake with the left foot just enough for the light to come on then and at the same time hitting the gass with the right foot. they see the brake lights and slow down, while your gaining some rear end distance back. or the other one is (road depending) drive on the sholder a little to try and kick up some rocks onto their car.

I usualy just give a few brake taps, and if that doesnt work i just let of the gas and go slower, and if they try and pass i get in the other lane to block them hah. that rear fog lidea is pretty sweet! but this never really happens in my slow yota...always seems to happen when i'm in my 72..
