I think the lowest you could go is like 5.71. But I think most folks go no lower than 5.29. 5.29's work good for most setups.

Yeah, 5.71 are known to be quite weak. Go for 5.29's if you buy new. Used you may be able to find 4.88's at a wrecker, call around. Front and rear diffs are interchangable. The strongest set up you are likely to find at a wrecker is 4.56 V6 diffs. Consider a double transfercase setup for better off-road gearing.

To answer your question, stock gearing varies depending on the vehicle. This will give you an idea of how Toys are usually geared from the factory, but things vary.
4 cyl / MT , 1979-80 - 4.38 4 cyl / MT , 1981 - 3.90 4 cyl / MT , 1982+ - 4.10 4 cyl / AT - 4.30 4 cyl / AT / 31" tire package - 4.87 4 or 6 cyl / MT / 31" tire package - 4.56 6 cyl / MT - 4.30

Don't know where you're @ in the States. TAP Recycling in CA quoted me $400 for F&R thirds w/4.87's. PLEASE keep in mind that TAP has had some bad press on some boards. Later...
