i just got this truck and it has a dead battery and the frame is rusting out. When I first got it there was no problem with jumping the battery but now it wont turn over. It just clicks. I think it is the soloniod but not sure. What should I do. Also the frame is a little rusty what would be the best way to fix it?

Have you tried lightly tapping on the starter with a hammer?

The starter is probably tost, rebuilt ones are not that expensive, but make sure you get one with a 5 year warrenty, because you will most likely be taking it back after a weekend of boggin.

I just had a starter with the same problems. What I did was pull the starter and disassemble it. I then proceded to empty a whole can of brake cleaner on the internals. I then checked the brushes to make sure none of them were stuck or worn past the limit of their travel. You can tell this by the gap between the brush holder and the copper wire going to the brushes. I then pulled the back off of the gear reduction box which is where the solenoid is located and throughly cleaned the contacts with a piece of emery cloth. Be sure and also clean the contactor ring that is on the solenoid plunger. After doing this, I greased the gear reduction through the hole that the motor gear goes through and reasembled everything. The starter works like a charm now. Before, I'd have to turn the key 10+ times to get the starter motor to turn. The whole project only took about 30 minutes and it sure beat paying the price for a new starter. HTH, Tony
