How hard is it to change the gasket for the rear differential? I looked in th echiltons and it is vague. I am so-so with auto work but I was worried that this is more then just a bold/unbolt in a few hour chore. Thanks

You'll have to unbolt the axles, 4 bolts each side, then slide them about 4-6 inches or until you feel them disengage from the carrier. You may have to remove the brakelines to do this, and you may not. Try first without removing them and if the axle's won't move enough then unfortuately you will have to do it.
At this point it is simply a matter of unbolting the third member which should drop right out, then clean the gasket surfaces on the housing and the thirds. Personally I perfer silicone to a gasket but if you prefer the paper gasket then use that. Reassemble is opposite of disassemble. Hope this helps.

Be sure to drain the diff FIRST , and you WILL have to disconnect the brake lines from the wheel cylinders.

might wanto go ahead and replace the outer axle seals to as sliding them in and out can make them leak.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D BTW, fourwd1, I didn't have to disconnect the lines on my V6 rear so it is possible. May depend on whether someone's already replaced the lines or not. Later...

How were you able to pull out the axle without disconnecting the hardline from the wheel cylinder at the backing plate ?? There is no slack in a hardline which would allow you to pull out the axle enough allow removing the diff. At least not on any 83-86 4WD or 2WD Toy I've ever worked on, 4 cyl or V6.

;D It's been a few months & summer of partying ;D ;D ;D But if I remember correctly, after the nuts came off, the axles pulled right out. I KNOW for a fact that I didn't disconnect any brake lines. I'd remember bleeding the brakes. I'll have the truck in the shop for service in a couple of weeks & I'll make a note to look. I'll remember when I see. Later...
