My '84 pickup came with an extra core engine. I'm wondering how to positively identify whether it is a 22R or a 20R? I'd expect there would be casting numbers somewhere on the outside that would positively identify it, or some other distinguishing characteristics?
Are the cylinder heads interchangeable between 20R and 22R?

The 22R and the 20R heads are interchangeable and there is a different look between the two of them that makes it easy to tell which is which.
The 20R also has larger ports that will give you more power.

a 20R has a double timing chain, and sprocket and you can fit a 22RE efi head and keep the chain as is. just remove the valve cover to see what engine you have
