They guy who sold me my "new" '84 4WD truck said that he has another engine with a tranny attached out of a 2WD pickup. Would a 5-speed from a 2WD interchange with the one in my 4WD, other than the obvious output shaft/tailhousing differences due to the transfer case?
Are there any other issues to be aware of, such as certain years or models that are better/worse or won't interchange to look out for?
If the other tranny he has will interchange with mine, I'd like to rebuild it on the side while still driving my truck.

Also, the 2WD tranny is lighter duty. Generally, the 84+ 4WD trannies are more heavy duty than the earlier ones, and units for EFI are more heavy duty than those for carbed vehicles. The turbo 4 cyl and V6 trannies are 23 spline, which won't mate up to your 21 spline t-case.
