does anyone know what 3" lift would be the best for my "82 4x4 long bed? i did a search, but no luck. i'll be looking to replace the stock shocks too. i really want the ride to be as smooth as possible. any advice is greatly appritiated.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten 27 different replies from 27 people by now. What I'm saying is that there is no "best" lift for any application, what's good to one person isn't necessarily good for another, there's a lot of personal preferance involved.
Several of the suspension manufacturers advertise "soft ride" suspensions. Get one of the 4x4 mags and check them out.
One thing to keep in mind, generally more lift = more arch = rougher ride.

thank's. so would it be better to go with 3" blocks all the way around to keep the spring arch to a minimum? or a 1 1/2 " block and 1 1/2" spring coupled?

I hope you are joking about using lift blocks in the front. Very dangerous. What are you looking for in a lift? What type of offroading do you do mostly if at all? How much do you have to invest? What are your mechanical/farbrication skill levels? ie. do you wrench, weld, have access to good tools?

i'm looking at lifting the truck to clear some 15x10 centerlines with a prety deep off-set. i only use the truck to take my mx bikes up into the mountains as well as some mud and sand scrambling. i'll put the lift on myself. a few years ago i put a 4" trail master on a '87 toy, so i know my way around ok. as far as budget, i guess between $300 and $500. (how expensive could it possibly be to lift a straight axle) again thank's for the help.

If you just want to clear bigger tires and wheels why not try a 2-3" body lift ? Cheap, easy, and won't change the ride.
For suspension you could try Add-A-Leafs for a couple of inches of lift. They will give you a slightly harsher ride, but still cheap and easy. Get the full length AAL's, not the short ones.
Or both, still well within your budget.
Stay away from blocks even though they're really cheap and easy. You will have axle wrap for one thing, the bigger the block the more the wrap.
Never use blocks on the front, as previously pointed out.

I would just get a decent pair of new front springs and use blocks in the back. They are'nt that bad, especially if you are not using it hard. How expensive can it be to lift a solid axle? It's can get pretty pricey. www.allprooffroad.com/extlift.html

yah, i think that's overkill for my kind of wheelin. i talked to downey and they sell a complete 3" leaf spring set up. 4 springs and doetsch tech shocks for about 400. hopefuly you guys can give me your thoughts on this. thanks
