I think most engine swaps will pass if they are set up right and not rigged without proper exhaust and emmision standard equipment. I've heard how bad Cali emissions are (wife is from northern cali) so I might be wrong. I would vote for the 4.3L chevy vortec V6. Its a powerful engine and gets decent gas mileage. I have a friend with a 87 runner and this setup and it is awesome. It has plenty of power.

I'm with snorkle. I would suggest going to DMV and/or the highway patrol and see what all is required to pass smog and highway safety rules. I'm sure you'll need all emmission equiptment. Not sure, but I think you need all the original electrical for the new engine. I've heard that also the tranny for the new engine also is needed, but I'm not too sure on that.

i may just do that to figure it all out but i'm really skeptical of the smog folx approving a 4 cylinder vehicle to a 6 cyl swap. in fact i doubt they would be able to run the test. but its a good idea to go ask. any web pages/links on similar swaps?
thanks

You can do the swap. I agree with the 4.3. I'm sure some things have changed since I lived in the Bay Area. When I swapped an LT1 motor into my 2wd chev truck, this is what I had to go through. You will have to retain all emissions from the 4.3. You will also have to have the exhaust from the donor vehicle. O2 Sens, cat converter, stock air cleaner. Best to buy the whole donor rig and do the conversion. When you go for smog you will need the vin from the vehicle you got the motor from. Provided its still that way. Good Luck Dennis

Good Luck Dennis what state/government agency checked off on all of this? not being a huge fan of american motors, i'm going to look into a 7M-GE swap. six in line with 200hp is plenty. i can buy a crate motor from Japan and use a cali donor vehicle. i'm trying to stay away from welding new mounts. josep
