I have a 1985 4 runner and have someone who can get us ford engines and trannys at a good discount. what engine/tranny combo would be best? i was hoping i could get a EFI 302, i dont think i would need a 351's wieght or size. but i havent heard as much swap info on fords as i have Chevy 350 with a TH350 tranny.

5.0 with a WC T-5 would be a decent option. Or if you are looking for a 4 speed with a granny first then a np435 or a T-18 would be the ticket.

im new to the whole swap idea, im gonna need a Xfer case too, i would like a manual transmission if possible, what does the 5.0/WC-5 come in? what are its common applications? should i use a ford Xfer case or would i get an adapter to use my yota one?

The World Class T-5 is the 5 speed used in 5.0L Mustangs. Very easy to find these at junkyards. I owuld stick with the toyota t-case. The 4cly toyota t-case is a gear driven unit. The gears can be swapped out from the original 2.28:1 ratio to aftermarket gears all the way up to 5:1 as well as being adapatable for dual cases. Dual cases is when you run the stock t-case with regular or upgraded gears, and use and adapter to attach another reduction box unit from another toy 4cly t-case in front of the original. The gives you the option of 2hi, 4hi, 2lo, 4lo, and 4double low. You would probably want to upgrade to the 23spline v6 input shaft for strength as well. An adapter can be purchased from Advance adapters to run any of the tranny mentioned with your existing t-case. The most common ford t-cases are the dana 20 and borg warner units. I would stay away from these as they are not known for their strength and are not all that upgradeable.

i agree with sean. i would use the ford tranny t-18 as they are pretty stout. then if you can an adapter use the yota tcase. they are plenty strong. if no adapter is available use it as a divorced unit. a divorced unit is where the trans is connected to the tcase via a drive shaft. if none of these are an option go with either a np205, np 203 or bw1356 in that order. do not a np208 or bw 1354 as they have aluminum housings and are chain driven. if you choose an auto i would go with a c6 as the are a good tranny, but i dont think they have o/d, so gas milage may be a little poor.
the 302 is a good choice, you wont need a body lift to do it as the distributor isin the front of the engine and it doesnt make much hp in stock for. well not so much you break alot of parts.
