First off Ill tell you what I drive...
85 Xtra Cab PU with a 22r 3.5in NWOR Springs and 2in lift shackles 31x10.5's rest stock
Now the Story...
Yesturday I got my truck stuck (leave it to WA kids to find mud in AZ...) I barried the rear axle (you couldnt see anything but the top of the pumpkin), and burried the front axle halfway. Once we got it out everything seemed ok. Then, once we got to the freeway to go back home my truck started shaking really bad once I got to about 50mph. At first we thought I had some mud stuck somewhere underneith but we cleaned off the entire underside and it is still shaking.. I believe the shake is in the rear end because I dont feel much in the steering wheel but am not sure.
Could of i simply messed up my allignment or what? I would like any suggestion on what may be the problem. Also I would like to know if you think it is safe to drive if i keep it under 50mph (before the shaking begins...)

my truck use to shake real bad once i hit about 50 also and it turned out to be bad u-joints..maybe the strain from bein in the mud so deep messed them up..or maybe you have mud caked on the back of your rear wheels

Just a thought you might have gotten some mud in your axel bearings. But it's probally the U joint if it vibrates.

I know you said that you cleaned all the mud, but just a little caked in the right place can throw things off real bad.
Check your wheels (both sides), the drive shaft and u-joints. At high speeds, an unbalanced component will seem much worse.

Yeah you might even pop off the brake drum covers and clean them out good as well. U-joint could be a possibility. Don't know how hard you tried to get out before getting pulled but if nothing else turns out, you might have bent an axle shaft. Check all the other things first but this might be a possibility.

Alright here is the report up to date...
First problem I noticed was I somehow lost my front drivers side wheel weight so the wheel was not balanced. I went and got it rebalanced hoping this was the only thing wrong. Once they finished I took it on a quick freeway ride and the constant shake was gone but there was more of an on and off shake like a bad u joint. I checked em and one of them is bad. Going to go pick 2 new ones up and replace them on both sides of the drive line while I am at it (they are a little old) Hope this will fix it the rest of the way...

;D WOOT ;D THE SHAKING IS GONE It only took 8 auto parts stores, one 4x4 shop, and finally a drive line shop to find the correct u joints for a 85 Toy. Anyone else have problems finding them? ended up costing me $20 a pop. It was an interesting experience to say the least, after we disasembled the rear drive line we realized checkers gave us the wrong u joints, so I had to take my "front" wheel drive Truck out to hunt for the Holy Grail of U joints. Thanks for they suggestions everyone!!

I'm having the same problem you had. I ran over a big rock slid off and hit the rear u-joint by the differential. when I took it back on the road I noticed a lot of shaking at 50 mph. When I told my dad about the problem he told it was a u-joint. Shure enough the u-joint was bad, so I replaced it. It cost me $23 bucks for one joint, and I had no problem finding it at the auto shop, they had them in stock. the shaking went away for about a day then returned again. I think the other joint is also bad. So now I have taken the drive shaft back out again, and will have to finish it tomorrow. I'm now going to replace all five U-joints, all of them are bad. Did you really drive your truck out on the road with just front wheel drive?

Did you really drive your truck out on the road with just front wheel drive? This is a common thing for a few rock crawler I know and I've had to do it twice. It's no big deal. It's just like driving in 4 High, but with all the power going to just the front wheels instead of all four.

Did you really drive your truck out on the road with just front wheel drive? Yea i had to do the same thing once. Was at the beach and a rear axle shaft broke. So i had to Fwd it home. Like Deadly said Its no big deal

When I replaced my U joints in the rear they were about 20 bucks each, and were not very hard to find, I have a 94, but I don't think it would be that much harder to find. Did you put in the new U joints yourself or take it to a shop? If so how much was it to have them pressed in? My dad and I did mine and it was very hard to do. We ended cutting one of the joints out with a cutting torch, and it was hard to put them back in. Pain in the ass. Not lokking forward to doing the front joints(would rather do it before they strat to go bad) Was it your rear joint that went out, or the front?

It was my rear joints that went out. They where a PITA to find, no one had them in stock/didnt know what i needed I did them myself. To get them out we used a punch to get the one side out then used a socket to keep the joint from going crooked and pownded that side out. Ruined the socket but it was craftsman and they replaced it. ;D To get the new joints in we used a round file to file down the hole a little to make it smooth again, then a flat (square?) file to file the sides smooth. then used a hammer to pop the new ends in (wasnt that hard to go in once we got the right joints) Only thing that would of made it eazier would to have a vice to hold the yoke/flanges in... hehe But us college guys made do and got it done.

Well I changed my other joint, it's a lot smoother but I'm still getting a little vibration, it might just be the tires though. do any of you guys with bfg mt's get a vibration too?
It was actually pretty easy for me to change em. My dad helped me, one would hold the shaft down while the other pounded the joint out with a hammer and punch. Then we just pound the new one in, grease it, and reinstall the shaft. We did this on the tail gate.

Haha, I wish mine was ez. They where the STOCK u joints, so from 20 years of being in there they where a little stuck, lol. We also did it on the tail gate. Think I will do the front joints when I have a little more time. They are a little bad too. Just dont notice it when im driving it around town ;D

My BFG MT's had a heck of a good vibration by the time I got rid of em. I had some flat spots and my alignment was way off too. So I think some vibration from the tires is pretty common. You can try to rotate the tires and see if the vibration moves or goes away. Sometimes with the extra weight of the engine in the front, you can put a vibrating tire up front and loose some of the vibration.

Thanks Snorkleman, I think I found the problem, one of the caps on the rear joint is a little loose. I think I need to get a new stud flange or something, cause the hole in the flange for that one cap is a little oversize. My tires are actually pretty good I think, and my truck is in PERFECT alignment.
