My 85 22r has gotten very hard to start (worse when cold) and runs rough . I changed the plugs and they were all fouled big time but I still have the problem. I changed the coil and wires to no avail. It is running rich but I havnt determined if its weak spark(ignitor or pickup coil) or carbarator problem. Any thoughts.
Thanks, Greg

Your carb could be running too lean or too rich or leaking at the gasket(s). Might even just need a little cleaning. Also check for any vacum leaks.

Thanks guys......I was thinking it may be a choke problem.
Anybody familar with the testing procedure of the igniter.....when I do the 1.5v battery test the igniter makes a buzzing noise....is it suppose to do that.

Im not sure but if I was in your position with the lil mechanical skills I have, I would pull the plugs out (all of em) and put the wires back on them and check each plug making sure it gets a good spark.
If it doesn't have good spark, i would then check your cap and rotor since your already did wires and coil. If that doesn't work then i duno.
If it DOES get good spark then i would check for vaccum leaks, carb troubles, anything like that.

Yeah...thought of that....the cap is fairly new and its a good one with brass lugs, but I might as well get another one since they are cheap.

If you are getting good spark then my next guess would be in the carb, if they are foulin then that means they are getting TOO much gas....

Sounds like the choke, I had the same problem. Take your air cleaner off when your engine is warm, the choke should be all the way open, if it's not, then adjust it. The round thing on the right side of your carb with a wire going to it is your choke coil. (Oops, I have a weber carb on my truck and the choke is adjustable, I just went out to look at my old one and it's not.) But with the weber choke, all you do is unscrew three screws a little, and turn it till the choke is all the way open. This fixed my rough running and rich mixture, but it made starting when cold even harder. Something isn't working properly, it won't close all the way when it's cold. If you have a stock carb you might need a new choke or something. I'd start with checking what the choke does when its warm and when its cold. And if it doesn't seem to move when it gets warm, then you might have a bad electrical connection, check that connection before you go out to get a new choke or something. let us know what you find.
