I have an 81, and i'm going to need a new tranny soon. I know 84 & 85 trannies are better than 81 - 83 5-sp. So I want to get like an 85 rebuilt tranny in my truck. My friend has an 85, and his shifters for his tranny and t-case are in different positions than mine. If I got an 85 tranny it looks like it would interfere with my t-case shifter. Does this mean that I would have to get an 85 t-case also? Has anyone ever done this?

1) 84+ trannys are slightly loger than older ones,so you'll have to relocate the x-member some.
B) 81-83 t-cases are top shift 84-88 carbed t-cases are forward shift (the shifter mounts in the tranny tailhousing) 84-95 EFI t-cases are top shift
c) Forward shift cases can be converted to top shift w/a fairly expensive kit from Marlin.
