i have an 81 toy pickup and someone told me that i could weld the spider gears in the front axle and have a long lasting locker that wouldnt effect 2wd drive. is this a good idea?

Yes u can weld the spiders and wont affect the rear. But its goin to be harder to turn when the 4wd is engaged. Its recomended to weld the rear, and have limited slip in the front. Me honestly wont do the front welding. my .02

What you are refering to is a "Lincoln" Locker. It is called that because lincoln is a welder brand, and your welding the spider gears. A lincoln locker provides a full time locked differential. It is the same as running a spool but cheaper. A lot of guys that run lincoln lockers use them in the rear rather than the front. The front is more dependent on steering and a locker can cause poor steering and turn radius. An auto locker (lock-right, aussie locker, and ez-lock) all disengage when you are off the gas. So it makes turning easier in coast mode. There are some times even with an auto locker you have to disengage 4x4 to turn sharp. SO if your always locked in the front, disengaging 4x4 is your only option to turn sharp. IMO I would use a auto locker. There are guys running a lincoln locker up front but I haven't heard if they like it or not.
