hey all, the last couple of days my truck (22re) has been having a really nasty ticking noise. At first i thought it was an exhaust leak, so i fixed that. Still the noise remained, so i took a probe under the hood and the noise seemed to be coming from the water pump, so i changed that. Still the damn noise is there, i aslo checked under my valve cover to see if it were the timing chain, but it seemed to be good....what the hell could it be Valves, lifters, and ideas please help

What is the ticking like? Is it knocking or ticking more like a clock?

its more of a rattling noise actually. It does rattle/tick faster when i hit the gas, and when i slow down it gets slower and sometimes goes away, but when i come to a complete stop it starts up again.

Sounds like something is loose, as in not bolted down. IMO

Sounds like a timing chain to me. It is impossible to know without hearing it though. How many miles on your rig, and has it ever been changed out? Good luck,

Yeah its hard to say without hearing it.....but if it sounds like marbles rattling around it could be a bearing. If its more of a ticking ,taping noise it may be rocker\valve spring related.

sounds to me like a connecting rod noise......or knock. they can disgiuse themselves as the sound of a tick. if it is the timing chain normally you could see shiny spots on it from running on metal. but i would say its a connecting rod noise.
just my 2 cents.

it could be a valve sticking is your rig smoking or burning oil if so I would say look at the valves just pull the valve cover & have someone turn the engine over (with the coil disconected of course )& watch & listen all the valves should move evenly
