I have a 85 toyota 22r and I'm wondering what the little box that is connected to the air intake is for. It doesn't look like it does much. I was thinking about removing it but I didn't know what it was for so I thought I would ask. It's the one on the drivers side directly opposite the battery. It's about 8" tall and 4 by 4" square.

Its a resinator , or muffler ... just to "muffle" the air flow noise .

I was under the understanding that the box was there as an area for water and debris that is deflected out of the intake. It has a little tube running out of the bottom to drain and water or mud. If it wasn't there the stuff that is deflected out will just go right onto the wheel well. But it may also serve as a muffller to the intake. I am not sure.

Wow, I never would have thought that it was a muffler. I was thinking like hntntrk that it was for collecting moisture and stuff before it enters the carb. Thanks for the help.
