I've got an 84 reg. cab, 22r with 6" susp. lift and solid front axle. When I'm turning the wheels in either direction(at slow speeds but mostly at a complete stop) the front end knocks. Pop, popopop. Its not the leif springs, or anything obvious rubbing. Seems to be something internal clicking against something else as the wheels turn left to right. Ive had local pros who can do anything look at this and scratch their heads, but nobody's opened up the hub or other steering componants to look. Maybe it's something simple? Every few weeks the wheels get a waxy coating of grease from a leaky felt seal in the knuckle(i know, i know), but never runds low on gear oil in the def. Connection? I have repaired lots from the head gas. to clutches(3) to rear dif gasket, but she's got me on this one. Anyone else gotta guess?

yeah thats funny...i got a 84 runner and it does the same thing....popping sounds from the front...im gonna re-do my wheel bearings...but other than that im thinking it might be worn out spring or shackle bushings? im just gonna plain rebuild my front and rear end bushings this winter anyways.

Yeah they say with any bigger tires(or if ya go wompin)replace the bearings kinda frequently. I tried spreading the springs and sprayed a ton of lithium grease in there, all to no avail. I'll take a second look at the bushings. Good luck with those bearings.

Have you ever broken a birfield joint? If so, you could have metal pieces in your steering bearings, inside the knuckle. Even if you havn't broken a birf, these bearings could be worn, or could have some kind of debris in them. These bearings do not wear out often, but the races do get grooves in them from constantly moving a small amount as you drive. These grooves could also cause a popping sound. I'm not sure I am using the right term when I say "steering bearings", that's just what I call them. They are the bearings at the top and bottom of you knuckle that allow the knuckle to pivot when you turn your wheels. Good luck

Oooo. So much for simple. The thought of ever opening up those 4x hubs always gave me a little scare, time to stop fearing fear!

Getting into the knuckles is not a big deal, just greasy. Get you a chiltons, or similar, and tear into it. Shouldn't take more than an hour to have it disassimbled.

I've got an 84 reg. cab, 22r with 6" body lift and solid front axle. Every few weeks the wheels get a waxy coating of grease from a leaky felt seal in the knuckle(i know, i know), but never runds low on gear oil in the def. Connection? A 6" Body Lift ?? I hope not. On a 20 yr old axle I garrantee the axle seal is shot and you have a milkshake of gear oil and knuckle grease. Been there twice. The best overhaul kit is the Super Knuckle kit from JTOutfitters. Has EVERY bearing and seal, plus grease and the elusive 54mm socket. The knocking sound could be inadequate lubrication of the birfs due to the above.

Sounds like the bearings at the top and bottom of the knuckle starting to wear. If it hasn't been done yet then the best thing to do would get a knuckle rebuilt kit and just replace everything to new parts. Just make sure that when you're putting it all back together that you pack it full of grease, to the point where you can't hardly see the birfield or much of the end of the axle. I'd also do the axle seals too, leaking or not.
Oh yeah about that 6" body lift I seriously hope not.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I think I got my hands full for a weekend or two between new knuckle bearings, axle seals, and taking a few inches off the "body" lift, right? Haynes should get me through it me tinks. And yes, there will be blood...

I see he edited his original post I've got an 84 reg. cab, 22r with 6" susp. lift and solid front axle. If you have to tools, you should be able to totally rebuild your knuckles in one easy weekend. Even allowing for several beer breaks. ;D
