I have a 1983 TOy truck. The charging system is on the fritz, I am farely sure that the 7.5 amp fuse is the problem. According to my wiring diagram it is located under the hood. I found it and i have no continuity threw it so I figured its bad. I tried to put an inline 7.5 and POOF it blew. So that little (so called) fuse on my diagram is more than a fuse. Anone know what it is or called? the number on it is 90980-04038 about 3/4 inch square with wire lead in and a wire lead out I have voltage going in and none coming out. I have about pulled my hair out over this. I am a new guy to this forum. Maybe someone can help me. Thanks Ya'll

Alright it is easy to say, but to do is a total different world. Here it goes. You got something wrong with the electrical system somewhere else. You could be looking at pulling the entire harness out stripping all of the ribbed protective tube off and taking a look. Things to look for: Melted coating on wires causing an arc between two different wires Pinched wires that will cut off the circuit completely cut wires not allowing any charge and possibly arking out on the body or the frame. check your other fuses, some of the fuses are linked in with other circuits (lights, switches, etc.)

A bad alt or reg could becausing a short to ground. Get a DMM and start troubleshooting.

Check your voltage regulator and your brushes.

92rocdoc. We have checked ever thing n the world on this blame trk, with a couple jumper wires we can get it to charge. The bottom line is the wire on brown wire goin to the alt. is not getting grounded inside the voltage reg. that is what energizes the alt to charge. So with 2 volt regs and no way to make sure they are good. I am going to go get a third reg. Maybe these 2 are not anygood. oh well my trouble continues
thanks

I got me a charge light relay out of a 79(kinda looks like a alt reggy) metal case and 2 wires 1 in and one out, i grounded it good and wired it up. Works like a dream, I didnt get the 95 dollar relay from the dealer wasnt sure that was the prob, but 5 dollars later from a junk yard...HELL YEAH FIXED..ill have pics and stuff soon. Good job, wiring can be a pain in the ass sometimes. Am I right, or am I right, or am I right?

ok heres the deal if anyone cares, the charge light relay is about a hundred bucks in my area and they are no 81-83 trucks to find in a salvage yard. you can take an earlier with is 2wd and 4wd get the charge light relay, looks like a metal box with 2 wires. right hand kick pahel, gorund the metal box and put the B to battery and the L terminal to the dash light. 92Rocdoc thaxs for your help...yall be good be back soon.
