what is the tube that comes out of the air cleaner housing and then into the valve cover? what is its purpose? and what should be coming out of it?

Its just a crank case breather tube. There shouldnt be anything coming out of it. If ther is check your pcv valve.

Thats why i asked because a little oil comes out of mine as well! im not sure what to do about it, no smoke comes out of the pipe ever and it passed smog. and runs fine. how is oil getting there and what can i do to stop it!

No they are not expensive. The PVC valve is directly behind where that hose is on the valve cover. There will be a line going from the top of it to the base of the carb. My truck has a bit of oil coming out that tube as well and always has. I put a new PCV valve on mine and it still does it. I don't know why but it happens. Maybe I got a bad PVC valve.

Do you guys still have the splash guard on your valve cover. Mine has a long thin piece of metal separating the valvetrain from the top of the cover. I would imagine that if that piece wasn't there, oil could splash up from the valve action and eventually leak out the PCV valve.
