I just baught a 84 hi-lux 22r 5sp. and the steering has some steering wheel play in it. The link that connects the pitman arm to the J arm is a little loose on the j arm end. Is there any way to tighten it, or should it be replaced. It has 31'' mt's on it and its going to be my daily driver. Next ? I rebuilt the tranny in my 86 a couple years ago and the new 84 is making some syncro noise. I plan swapping the trannies. I know I have to change the companion flanges and everything else should bolt up the same right?

The drag link has sockets in each end that mate to the ball on the pitman arm and j-arm. The sockets are spring loaded, and you can increase the tension by adjusting the big screw at each end. The sockets may be too worn and need replacing.
If both the 84 and 86 are 22R's (carbed) they would have the same tranny, so the swap is easy.

The 86 is injected and the 84 is carbed. Whats the difference besides the companion flanges?

The 86 w/EFI uses a W56 tranny with a top shift t-case. The 84 w/carb uses a G52 tranny with a forward shift case.
Either swap both tranny and case or you'll have to convert the forward shift case to top shift.
