hey guys, do you know where the fuel pump relay s located, as well as the specific location of the fuse for this circut? My 86 4runner wouldn't start yesterday and I thought it was a burnt ful pump, but after I put direct 12v to the pump, it kicked on. I installed a new fuel pump just to be sure it wasn't clogged. to get home I had to run a wire from a 12v source in the cab to the pump. I checked the fuse box in the kick panel, and a fuse was blown so I replaced it, and then diconnected the battery to reboot the system in case it needed it. It strill didn't work. I'm not getting power th thepump, and I hear that there is a relay for the system, but i can't find it. if you know anything on this subject, please help. thanx

Its right below your fuse box. Mine is the bottom one. Its silver and round and you will see that it says( EFI relay) next to it on the plastic piece that it mounts to.

Turn the ignition switch to the "ON'' position, but don't start the engine. Remove the rubber cap from the fuel pump check connector and short terminals FP and +B. Check that there is pressure in the hose to the cold start injector. At this time you should be able to hear the fuel return noise from the pressure regulator. If no pressure can be felt in the line, check the fuses and all other related electrical connections. If everything is all right, the fuel pump will probably require replacement. Remove the service wire, reinstall the rubber cap and turn off the ignition switch. Fig. 2: Short the check connector-typical Fig. 3: Short the check connector-typical www.autozone.com, go to vehicle repair guides..then just feel your way threw until you get to the pictures that go along with what I just posted.....realy locations and stuff are easy to find (well unless they are incorrect..lol...been threw that) but check it out...good luck

i do think the relay is behind the glove box. when i was trouble shooting my fuel pump i found that the relay or at least one of the relays was behind the glove box. now this was on my 85 4runner. my wifes 86 truck has the the same relay in the same place! if i'm right the relay gets a signal from the mass air. just my $0.02. good luck! later!

ok man, so I hotwired my fuel pump to be on all the time while my 4runner is running. this was enough to get me home nad around unitll I can get the parts needed to do it right. or so I thought... the next day, I went to go start up my 4runner to warm it up so I could do some diagnostic test on it, it wouldn't start again. this time it's getting fuel, spark, and I'm guessing no air. so it seems like both the fuel pump relay and the mass air flow meter have kicked the bucket. I don't know? but it's cranking like a champ, and I can here the fuel pump kicking on, and it's got preasure, so the only thing could be air or spark. to me it sounds like it's getting spark, but that might be dumb of me to say because I'm not sure if you can hear the spark. is there a sure fire way to see if I'm getting spark? and also where is the mass air flow meter? sorry I'm such a newbie to mechanics, but I'm young and learning. thanx mock1

Pull a spark plug out of the head , take the plug wire and put the plug in it and touch it to the head and have someone crank it over. Make sure you are only touching the spark plug boot or you'll get a little jolt. The mass air sensor is above the air cleaner housing.

or the even easier way just pull a wire shove a screwdriver in it and place it so the metal isn't touching but can arch to a ground, i.e. a bolt on the body or something and crank it to see if there's a spark between the screw driver and the ground.

OK young fella....First of all dont try to over think the problem. Do your Diag as complete as you can...You may very well have a mass flow prob, but I doubt lack of air is the reason your runner wont crank...after all we ar surrounded by air ....you fuel pump relay is prob in the box under the hood the realys under your dash on the passenger side are for a/c and prob a charge relay....elec issues are a pain in the ars..I been there lately. But if you straight wire and it runs you probably havent found the correct relay, or simple as a fuse..if it is blowing the fuse straight wiring it may burn your truck up. Get you a wiring diaghram and a good test light check for volts where they should be and go slow its a process, TRUST ME...lol...I had a nightmare on my hands but it can be fixed...Fire, Fuel and Compression thats all you need to run, now there are several different reasons why it runs poorly but those three simple things and a gasoline engine will run. GOOD LUCK Holler if I can help Bill
