i was going to bob the bed on my 85 all the way to the shackles and make a bracket for the 5" round tube bumper. but then i thought that id leave 6" and notch the frame instead and just weld it strait to the frame what should i do.

I would cut the frame off right behind the shackels and notch the frame out. I think it would look better. THats what I am going to do to mine.

Make sure you leave a couple of inches behind the shackles just in case you decide to go with a long travel suspension eventually. I had to re-extend the frame on mine a couple of inches when I did my long travel rear suspension.

good idea i didn't even think of that, i was also thinking of turning the rear bumper into an air tank has anyone ever done that

I have heard plenty of talk aboout the air tank rear bumper. Unfortunately I haven't seen anyone do it. It doesn't seem like you would get a fracton of the air that you could store in a good air tank. The air pressure isn't high enough to store a decent amount of air or CO2. And you might have a problem getting someone to charge it up without the inspection on it, considering a good CO2 tank will hold in excess of 2000PSI.

From the center of the rear leaf spring hanger back 8'' is where I am going to cut mine off. THat will leave about 1/2'' of frame behind my double shackel. That will equal about a 8'' bob instead of the typical 14''. I have the 63'' chevy springs with the double shackels in the rear, I used the shackels so I wouldnt have to move the rear hanger and it gives more flex. Some people say they will unload on side hill but I havnt had a problem in 4 years. But right now there isnt any paint on the bottom side of my bumper and my hook digs in on the steep stuff .

I plan on bobbing my bed next week. I was going to bob and dove tail it. With the dove tail I was going to take the back in even with the frame, which is about 8''. But then I wouldnt be able to put my tool box in the bed when I go wheelin. But I just might do it any how, I have been using cheap plastic totes to put all my crap in. But I will only have a week to get it done, next weekend I am going on a wheelin trip. Scew it I am going to dove tail it, going out side right now and start laying it out.

heres a tip for the cutting, an easy way to cut through a lot of sheet metal, if you don't have a plasma cutter, is an 8" metal blade on a circular saw. You can get em for like 2-3.00( i found one at a discount home deppot kinda place, but also at harbor frieght) and will cut a lot more then a bunch of 4 1/2" grinding wheels.. (i went through like 15 4 1/2" bobbing my old truck) and tried the circular saw with 8" (just took off the retractible gaurd) and i cut through my entire truck on one 8" blade and one 4 1/2" blade for smaller angle stuff you get a lot deeper cut too obviously.
my vote is for going right behind the shackles, and trimming the frame until it was fully enclosed (right behind the shackle. and then i actually trimmed the roll pan like 1/2" around the shackles and it looked real nice from behind, might have looked funny with a body lift though.. or if there's a body lift then mounting the bumper to take up the gap would work too.. good luck, bobbed beds are awesome

yea having the right tools helps get the job done a lot faster and easier. we build gates gates on the side so we have a pretty good selection of tools but we definatly need more such as a tube bender. i went out and took a few puls with my tape and made couple of lines so it looks like i'll start hacken away and thanks for reminding me about long trave i forgot about that. and did decide on going 8" also. the before and after picks will hopefully soon be on here.

I am debating on wether to cut the bed loose at the bottom and leave the wheel wells attatched to the bed sides and trim the bed floor. Or just cut the bed sides loose at the bottom and leave the wheel wells attatched to the bed floor and trim down the wheel wells. My bed is a older fiber glass one. The inside of the bed is steel and the outer bed sides are fiber glass. But the steel is getting rusty, so its time for me to work my magic.

Hey 81 tuff truck, have you started on your bed yet. I hacked mine all up. I bobbed the rear off of it and dovetailed it. Have to finish up the dovetail and starting on the exo cage. I plan on tying the rear tube bumper into the exo then going up to the stinger.
