I kept the stock mechanism in the door jamb and just moved the stock release handle down lower in the door. A little bending of the mechanism rods was needed.

thanks for the advice. im either going to do that or just use the push rod for the outside handle.

on my 4runner there is an area to mount a second handle.. on the passenger side it is mounted for the back seat to get out.. i just had to remove the normal handle and on the drivers side, the mounting holes are there, so i just switched the handle to that one and cut the linkage shorter and bent the end to attatch to the handle like factory. i don't know if the pickup doors have the same structure, but i would assume so if they bolt on the same..factories mass produce and then put on the fine touches.. if so then you can see an opening for the handle, and two small squares for the plastic pieces that the screws go into that hold the handle. on the oposite side fo the outside handle it won't be as aggressive as the ones that put the handle on the top of the door, but i still got mine down the the middle body line of the door with out looking wierd.. besides, much lower and you might as well just take the door off.

My 83 has the indentions in the door for the back set handles. So does the 85 4 Runner.

i did the same as FOURWD1 did, i kept the stock arm and just bent it alittle and moved it down to make it work. i drilled a whole where i wanted it and just bolted it on. i put it on the truck and it worked great. here are some pics i will eventually weld it but thats as far as i am now.
