I'm fairly new to Toyotas. What does it take to swap a 22re into a 83" 4x4 that has the stock 22r motor and 5-speed tranny? Will the motor bolt directly up to the tranny without a bell housing adaptor? Will there need to be new motor mounts? or do these motors use the same mounts? Obviously there will need to be a wiring harness does Offroad Solutions make one for this swap? or some other company? What about oil pan clearance if the truck has a 4" lift?

For the wiring, I did mine by finding random parts off ebay and junkyards. It works but it would have been much easier to get a donor truck with everything. Offroad Solutions makes a harness but it is pricey. You could find an entire truck that is wrecked or has a blown motor for that price.

thanx forwd1. My next question would be. Am I correct in assuming that a 22re from a 2wd is the same as a 4x4 22re? It seems it would be lots cheaper to buy a complete 2wd truck and swap in the motor and use the harness from the complete donor truck. Also, would the clutch from the original 5 spd be the correct size? I'm guessing yes if the block bolts up without any problems. and I guess the radiator and exhaust can be kept and used from the 22r with the newer 22re right? Or are the exhaust manifolds different?

I would assume the 22re from a 2wd is the same, I would wonder about the camshaft, it is probably the same but I am not sure. The clutch will work, the radiator and exhaust can be kept but the radiator will require the 22re hose on the top. Just be sure to get a 5speed donor so the computer will work.

The engines are the same except for the oil pan, you will have to swap it out for a 4wd one. I think that you have to change the exhaust manifold. I can't remember if the swap happened at this time with the with the exhaust exits.
