Since the one above is for those V6ers, here's one for us 4 bangers.
Credit must go to where credit is do...... By: John Viernes - jviernes@myplanet.com After shopping around for a good deal on the K&N filter system, I could not find an intake solution for less than $240.00. Instead of trying to make my own system. I decided to improvise. First. I installed a stock K&N filter, then I cut some holes in my stock air box ( a total of three) two in the front, and one on the left side. I figure this mod has increased the air flow over 300%, and my gas mileage and performance has increased noticeably. Oh yeah, it's probably a good idea to install a pre-filter behind the new airbox holes. I got mine from the local air conditioner supplier. It's a lifetime washable filter used for commercial air conditioners. TOTAL COST: new filter $40.00 + pre filter $15.00 = $55.00 NOTE: While this is a slick (and cheap) way to improve air flow for MUCH less money than the K&N system, it also suffers from the same short fall as the K&N system....the risk of getting water through your intake goes up significantly. If you 4 wheel in wet or muddy conditions this cheap trick is probably not a wise addition to your truck.

This is about the same as the old trick of flipping over the air cleaner lid on a carbed engine. ;D

Alright guys, I did the airbox mod. Im quite pleased. ;D. Im at high altitude so mods like headers, exhaust, and intakes dont make a big difference for us up here like they do at sea level. So as far as HP id say not a real noticable amount, but id like to say there is some pep when im accelerating. The big difference is in the sound. Its a lot deeper and throatier. I cut two holes in the front, one in the side, and one in the back. If i plan on goin through any mud, i have duct tape to slap over the holes whenever im on the trail. Which some of you guys should consider. Bye!

duct tape thats a good idea. I never thought of that. I was wheeling the other day and i went through a couple of water holes and suck a little bit of water in my intake. It sputtered a little bit. So I got out and wiped the water out with a rag and it was fine. I will have to carry some quack tape with me.

I bought a 4'' deck plate from a boat marine yard for about $15.00 they also come in 3'' and 5" that way when I go muddin I can screw the plate in and not worry about water from that point anyway still got the hole inside the fender though mmmmmmmm snorkle maybe ;D anyway this is a trick/mod that has been around for awhile now. We started doing this in the 80's when airboxes started showing up on everything. I don't know about this giving you more HP but I do know that it does pretty much nothing inthe low range but it gives what the engine is screaming for at higher rpm's more air. what this accomplishes is this you will go through shift poimts quicker which gets you to your top speeds faster. at least that has been my expierience. I never used a dyno before and after to find out. and when goin wheeling just screw the plate back in so you don't get mud and water in the box

I cut the hole in the front behind the washer bottle I can't post pics but it very easy using DEADLY'S banana scale I would give this one a 2 banana just make sure you mark it off correctly mine is set at the lower offcenter otherwise it would be harder to get to when I want to put the plate back in for wheelin the washer bottle is a little bit of a tight to get a hand in between there just remember to take your time

I used a drill to drill a series of holes in the sides of my air box. I noticed that water is less likely to get in on the side toward the driver and the side by the fender. Here is a pic of my box after drilling the holes.

I have a V6 Taco and I did the 4" Deckplate Mod also. I used silicon around the edges so when the deckplate is closed it is waterproof, and when it is open the engine can breathe.
