Basicly the tire is supported by the axle housing not the shaft itself...For ex. on a dana 60 or even a semi truck axle how you can unbolt and remove just the shaft with the tire staying on the housing as compared to a toyota axle where the wheel bolt directly onto the shaft...this makes it stronger because the shaft is not under any stress from supporting the weight of the vehicle...Hope this is makes sense
