What exactly are gear ratios? What would be the difference between a 3.31 ratio and a 7.17 ratio? Also, how do you find what ratio your vehicle is, without the owners manual? Sorry this is kind of a foolish question but I'd be thankful if someone could clear this up for me.

The number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the number of teeth on the pinion (eg: 41/11 = 3.73) equals the gear ratio.
3.31 would be a higher ratio than 7.17
The axle code on the VIN plate on the firewall can be decoded to get your ratio. Look for a number like G292, etc.

www.toysport.com/Technical%20Information/Toyota%20Differentials%20Identifications.htmYou can decode from there. Keep in mind.... Be sure to post your questions under the correct titles for the best answers.... Ie: Lockers/Gears I just happen to always check the "25 most recent posts" Sometimes people here tend to frown upon highjacked threads. It also makes it hard for others to follow up on legit replys that actaully correspond to the original posted questions.... Rock on. Stew

If you wonder if you have the stock gears or not...Jack up both rear tires, mark the drive line and the tire...rotate the tire once, counting how many times the axle spins and that will get you in the ball park of what gears you have in the rear...
