This was sort of hit on, but I have a different spin on it. I am thinking of spooling the rear of my runner, and I saw a thread that talked about the welded rear diff. I saw some responses from people that seem to know what they're talking about, so am I just as safe to weld the rear as I am to spool the rear?

Sure, it's effectively the same. A spool will be stronger though.

I dont know how they are off road but I know as far as on road its a bad idea to weld. I have seen craked rear difs and torn up axles at the 1/4 mile its a cheap way to do it that comes back at you down the road. At best the weld will just break but it can be worse like this.
Best one that comes to mind was a 68 mustang with a built 460 going to a Ford 9 inch he went to light up his slicks in the box and snapped the 9 inch, If you know those older cars you know that the 9 inch is one tough soab to break.

Welding a rear is best done by a professional/experienced welder. There's too much that can go wrong.

Myself and a buddy did it last weekend to his s-10 blazer thats all stripped down. You just have to know what you are doing. I still would not reccomend it on the street. Just dont weld the spider gears to the cross shaft. The cross shaft is hardend steel and when you put heat to it it becomes brittle and you wont go far.

the first thing if your going to weld is to let a pro do it . theres to much to consider when welding . 1. to much heat you weaken metal 2. weld penatration(not enough its a weak weld to much its a weak weld ) 3. enven the strongest looking weld can be crap if surface prep is not done right i.e do you channal ,layer side overlape.any contamination (gear oil) will weaken the weld itegrityit will look great but will have weak spots. just a few things to add into the mix hope it helps nick

the old addage " you get what you pay for" holds true especially for this one.............spool it for sure , if you weld it , I don't care if your or you know an AWS Certified Welder........I guarantee the weld will break if your planning on doing any crawlin...........now if your in the deep mud........ooops............oh yeah you'll snap it there too .................Just spend the $ 125 for a spool and do it kinda right...........I'd run ARB's , If I had to do it again.......I run Quicklocks...........Make sure you save your pennies for a new Tcase and tranny if you weld , I've seen others who have smoked their yota on the 'con with "Welded" gears.............just buy the dang spool man and save yer self lots of dough and aggravation.......

....also the uneven weight of the weld itself may cause problems in vibration if you have to go on the highway.
