I am planning on running some 35's on my truck. I know that 5.29's are better for low end on the trails, but I am also going to be using my truck as a DD for a while longer so was considering 4.88's. I was wondering what people running either of these gears with 35's can do on the highway. What is the speed you can go on the highway without stressing the engine to the max?
I have a 85 with a 22r.

for 35's you could also run 4.56 if it's a DD otherwise I'd run the 4.88's the 5.29's are more for crawler's just my.02

I have a 91 w/ 22re, 33's and 5.29's. I can still do about 70 down the freeway. 5.29's should be perfect with 35's and a 4 banger.

I run 5.29's with 35's on my DD and still hit 90mph (120 w/32's) down the freeway, 70-75 on steep hills. Engine still stock other then K&N air filter, header, high flow cat, flowmaster, and 2 1/2" exhaust.

For off road is main idea to keep the engine in peak torque or peak horsepower? Reason I ask is, if an engine swap is done you have a whole new power curve to worry about.

Go low now! I started out with 4.88 and 6 months later I decided to put in 5.29s. I wish I'd have saved the money I spent on the 4.88s.

I've got an 89 with a 22RE and 5:29's with 35's , lockers, and I can run about 83 on the freeway
so go low ............if you are like me , you'll be glad you did, because of the eventual addtional mods that will allow bigger than 35's , you'll need the 5:29's or even 5:71's
my .02 cents
