I'm getting less convinced by the convienence of the whole selectable e-locker retrofit. This weekend my brother was in town so we took the pig down to the local mud hole. I stick close to town now until I swap my motor as the 3.0 is on its last legs.
We get down to the city floodway and the water is very high leaving only the mud pits around the back to play in. I drove down by the water so that I could at least show my bro how the pig climbs as the flood way is dug out with steep hills on both sides. The driveable side is gravel and rock, fun at first but no really challenge. I engaged the locker, so I thought, and climbed out.
After that we head back to the pits and see their are already a couple trucks their. A late model chevy on Mickey Thompson Claws was stuck hard with a Dodge Cummins diesel hooking up to pull him out. We stopped to lend a hand, well a pair of pliers actually and the extraction was done.
Now it was my turn so I started to enter a bog that didn't look to deep and suddenly my hood was almost submerged. My back end was not in the real soup yet so I decided to back out. I could move back about 4-5' but then would spin. I tried to rock it out but it was to no avail. I couldn't understand how I could possible be stuck like this when my brother says to me " your tires not spinning on this side". I look out my side and when I take my run the tire starts to spin away.
"Spinning now?" I query. "No it ain't doing shit" my brother responds.
The guy with the chevy is watching and tells me to try going foward. Hesitant to do it for fear of my motor sucking in some water, I try foward anyway having conceded that I wasn't backing out under my own steam. As soon as my back tires entered the pit I was stuck complete, not able to move front or back at all.
Long story short, well not really, the Dodge ends up pulling my ass out as well.
I couldn't beleive that this is the second time my locker has failed. I'm sure it's the wiring again. Talk about embarrassing and talk about a piss off. For the money I spent I could have easily had a lockrite and I'm sure I would have been out. Selectability is great but when I comes at the cost of reliability its not worth it.
My plan now is to lock it and leave it locked until I swap out the rear and move the locker to the front.
I've had two of the recommended controls that you will find wiring diagrams on the internet built for my locker, both built by a instrument tech journeyman who really knows what he is doing but they still both failed.
Sorry I just had to vent.
