I'm trying to get myself a used rear third member w/ 5.29's so i can get my truck on the road.
If i bought a v6 third would it work in place of my 8" 4cyl third on my 86?
Did toyota make an 8" front third? I found an ad for an 8" front third member. I thought fronts were 7.5"? If there is an 8" front third would it work in my rear or would the rotation be off.
Sorry if these are stupid questions but i'm not all that up on gear, thirds, etc.

1. a V6 rear third and a 4cyl rear third are both 8". the V6 came with 4.56 (i think?) gears and was a 4-pinion design, wheras the 4cyl was only 2-pinion, and typicially came with 4.10 gears. 2. the solid front axle trucks ('79-'85) had a 8" front axle, but when they went to ifs in '86, they changed to the 7.5" front. so... a V6 rear third/diff would work in place of your 4cyl, but if it has different gears than the front diff, make sure you don't run in 4wd and an 8" front third/diff wouldn't work on your ifs.... that is.... unless you swap out the ifs for a solid front axle.... just a thought... ;D and i might've gotten a little confused between V6 and automatic tansmission diffs , or left some info out or something, so anyone else that knows, please comment

drumbum thanks for the reply. Lots of good info.
One thing, i have ifs and i aready got a 5.29 third for that. I was wondering if a 5.29 front third (79-85) would work in the rear. thanks dave

Yes, the 8" third used in the solid front axles are identical to the ones from rear axles.
You can use any toyota 8" dif. Just don't put a high pinion dif in a rear axle.

ok, correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought i remembered hearing somewhere that, while a front third would would in the rear, it wouldn't be as strong 'cause front and rears thirds are built opposite and it would be driving on the flat 'coasting' part of the gear instead of the 'tooth edge' part, if that makes any sense... maybe that was something different, though, i'm not sure ...

Thanks again for the help
If anyone knows the answer to the question that drumbum brought up, it'd be great to know.

The front and rear low pinion 3rds are the same gears. The front runs on the coast side of the gears. This is not a problem because the front is rarely used all the time.
The high pinion 3rds out of land cruisers are reverse cut gears, which is a stronger setup for a front dif, but causes problems if installed in the rear because the load is on the coast side of the gears and the rear axles are always used, and have more torque applied to them.
Hope that clears it up. If not, let me know.
