Allright, here it it. I bought a new third with a detroit locker in it for my 85 toyota pickup. The third went right in without problem, but when we went to put the axles back in they stop about 1/4 inch before going all way way in. the splines are lining up and everything because we can spin the driveline and they spin and all, but wont go all the way in. Anyone else Ever have this problem when instaling a detroit locker? If you did have this problem did you have the axle shafts shortened? ends choped off of them? If so, how did you do it, or did you take them to a machine shop? WHat would you suggest I do, My truck is on jack stands and I am going out of town this staurday

No, everything lined up. I am interested though. I will ask around were I work and see if anyone can come up with anything.

Ok, maybe me and my buddy are dumb, but we got them in. What we had to end up doing is pull the drums off, for some odd reason, with the drums removed the axles would slide all the way in. I do not know why this is, maybe someone can explain it for me? Anyway, the locker works great, can't wait to take it off road

Where your brake drums slid outward any??? That seems kind of oddd. But atleast you got it in. Dont feel bad we all dumb things from time to time. Like mating the tranny to hte motor and forgetting to lube up hte pilot bearing .

I just ran into a similar problem when installing a used third with a lsd. The splines lined up but there was about a 1/4" gap.
I pulled out the axles a little bit wiggled things around and then somehow they just slid right in. Don't know why it happened or how it eventually worked. Maybe when you removed the drum you did the same type of thing i did, and then it just worked.

Maybe, I've just decided to accept it as something that just works, and am not going to ask any more questions. I have had soo many problems making stuff fit/work/not fall out on my toy, that anything that works, I don't really question. Like now one u bolt mysteriously loosens every once in a while, and my block randomly rejects header studs that work for months, then leave, then replace and no more problems, random heater work not work, horn died on me, stereo stuff randomly vanishing tires puking for no apparent reason and ill just stop the list there, cause it gets worse
