Ok I have read and read and think I know what I need. All I am wanting to do is run 31's. I have a 97 Taco with the 2.7 and 5spd tranny and 3.58 gears and it has 31's on it now. Came with 225's. It is a dog in 4th and 5th. I am thinking I could get beter mileage with lower gears. Mostly highway, daily driver, will be pulling a lawnmower and a fourwheeler on a small trailer and occasionally a jon boat. It is a hunting truck so I wil be offroad. But I also want good mileage. So I am thinking 4.10 maybe 4.3 or 4.5. Which do you guys suggest? RPM's I have no clue it is an LX with no tach. So opinions please.

wow the newer yotas offer that high of a gear for their trucks..........that sucks.......... most 89- 95 4 cyl yotas had 4:10's already..........anyway .......I'd say only running 31's.......I'd get 4:56's or 4:88's.........just because you'll have way better power , and if down the road you decide to put some 33's on .....the 4:88's will still alllow for good freeway speed and great power, and good mileage........make sure when you decide on gears to at least put in a rear locker........you'll find that you don't need to put it in 4 wheel drive most of the time , if your only getting to the hunt........ and provide 100% better traction for pulling a trailer....
my .02 cents

So would 4.10 be the best for mileage if 4.56 is the highest?

if you do alot of highway drving then 4.10s, otherwise Id go with 4.56's. If you dont have that much money to regear, I would buy a used rearend and frontend for pretty cheap. www.taprecycling.com I got my frontend with 4.88's for less then 100 dollars.

not sure if they made a 4.30 for the taco but they may be the best bet for you.

You'll regret it later if you only get 4:10's ......at least get 4:56's.......I'd run 4:88's with 31's.........since that's whats recommended for 33's and most 33's measure 31.5 - 32 max........so technically 4:88's are better, based on what you want......

4.56 is what Toyota used when they put 31s on the trucks so i would go with that seeing that thats what was stock on those trucks. My dads 91 with the V6 has lots of power and has 4.56 gears and 31s.(major difference from my 82 with 235s and 4.10s) Ive heard before that Toyota put 4.30s in the automatics.

i would go with the 4:88. the 4:56 will get the job done on the 31's , but if you ever did go to 33's you wouldn't notice a very big difference at all. plus when i was shopping for gears the 4:88 were cheaper then the 4:10 because of the hi damand for lower aftermarket gear. right now i run 33's with 4:10 but i have a 3.4 v6 and i would like to run at lest 4:56. if your looking to save gas get a k&n air filter and some performance spark plugs. it will help a little but you will till the difference.

Well, remember to think about Power to weight ratio........I guess if your hunting birds......then 4:10's are ok, with them weighing 2-3 lbs a piece.......if your hunting Mule deer, and you just bagged a 800 lber then you need 4:88's....... also......with power to weight ratio considered......you'll get better gas mileage, with a lower gear than with a taller one, when your truck becomes heavier than what it's stock gearing was designed for.....your engine has to work harder, so it uses more fuel........thats why alot of times a V8 truck gets better gas mileage with 35's on it than a Toyota truck with a 4 cyl with 35's on it......POWER to WEIGHT ratio.........now I know your putting 31's on...but I assume your not hunting in the flats......based on your above comment about 4th and 5th gear .......assumes that your probably driving up hills......the lower the R&P's, the more you'll be using 5th up hills on the Highway........I have over 31 years of 4 wheel driving experience , because I've been going wheeling since I was 12........believe me when I say that you'll regret buying 4:10's , and if your going to buy 4:30's or 4:56's, that the gas mileage difference between a 4:30 and a 4:88 is minicule..........but with the added weight of 31's etc... you'll get better mileage with ....for the last time .... Lower gears= more power.........I hope that makes sense !!!

Thanks for all the help guys. I know nothing so that is why I asked. Qauil hunting(did that today), duck, deer and turkeys. I live in KY so I have hills. But I live in Western Ky close to KY Lake so the hills are not THAT bad. I am probably going to save pennies so I can put a locker in when I do all this. My hardest prob so far is finding someone to do it around here. I may have to take it to Nashville I heard there is a place down there. I am probably just going to stick to 31's. If I want 33's I will put them on the Superduty, the old powerstroke will take care of them. I am just loving this truck so far I have only had it for a month. It is clean enough to go to town in and scratched up enough to take offroad. Fits my bill perfectly. Anybody know anyone down around Western Ky that does gears? Thanks guys for all the replies, keep them coming.
