I was questioning if I need any diff experience when changing to a spool on my '93 22re truck. I'd like to do it myself but the thought of shimming and backspacing scares me after my buddy wiped his out after doing a Detroit locker in a D60. Also should I get a spool, or mini spool. I do not know the difference, however I am well aware of the all-time-locked of both.

yeah you would have to do all that too put in a spool since it replaces the carrier. An auto locker like the aussie(not the detroit replaces carrier) is feasible since you dont mess with those settings when installing it. I would go with a auto locker unless you are really strapped for cash.

An auto locker, ok. So I'd probably be able to do it myself? I'd rather put the cash down for something that I can do myself than paying for labor on a on an install that needs to be shimmed and/or backlashed. Does this sound feasable?

there are several posts on here about the aussie locker, I installed it myself about 2 months ago. If you have decent mechanical skills you can probably do it yourself. Here is a installation site on how to install a auto locker, I used it to install my aussie www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/lockright_locker/Its nothing that is real difficult, though you may run into some snags.
