i just heard somewhere that the ring and pinion gears that fit the 4cyl 89-95 pickups fits the 4cyl tacomas. anybody know if there is any truth in this?

No.
TRD Rear End - V6 8" Ring Gear (same 8" size as 4 cyl non-Taco but different)
Non-TRD - 8.25"/8.4" Ring Gear (same gear size, but known by two different measurements)
