Hi all, i'm just wondering how 33in tires w/ 5.29 gears would perform on the highway and offroad...as i'm only brave enough to go big as 33s with the ifs. I would like to eventualy go with 35s when i get around to doing a sas...which wont be for a while...btw i have a 2.4 w/ auto

Normally 4.88's would be the best choice for 33's, but with the auto trans 5.29's would be good.

To change this topic a bit with out going to far off. Who here has ran 5.29 gears with 33's? I do no interstate driving and was wondering if this setup would just be like not having an overdrive since i rarely get into 5th gear anyhow? Oh and i have the 22r w/ a 5 speed. The other day riding around was one of the rare days that my truck actually hit 60 on the speedometer. It has only done this a few times in the last month.

When I first lifted my recent TOY I ran it for a couple weeks with 32's before getting my 35's and was hitting speeds up to 120 mph.

To change this topic a bit with out going to far off. Who here has ran 5.29 gears with 33's? . I ran 33's w/5.29s, 22R, 5 spd for a month while waiting for 36's. It sucked, especially on the highway. I could never find the right gear. It was like I needed a 3.5rd, 4.5th, and 5.5th gear.

ok thanks for the responses. Someone said on a old post that with 31's that your speedo is 5% off so at 50 you do 55. My truck 99.5% of the time never sees the needle go over 50 and but maybe 5 times since i had it went over 60. So the low gearing i don't think will hurt me.
Another thought? I was told that for best mpg at your normal cruising speed you want your motor to be in its peak torque band. On a bbc that is around 2000 rpm on a sbc that is up a few more in the 2200-2400 range. On a v6 a little more and a 4 a little more. Right now to keep my rpms and normal cruising up to even 2000 alot of the time i have to ride in 4th. So this should with out doing the math right now should put me up into the power range. Higher rpms do not mean worse gas mileage and lower rpms do not mean better. Riding where your motor pulles the best vacuum does get better mpg. The mpg is just a side thought for me though. I will be able to cruise where i go in 5th gear and in first when traffic is inching or when on a bumpy trail be able to just idle along in first with it being more now like a granny gear.
oh and i have the 33's in my yard. but not the gears.

DEADLYPEACE, 120 mph in a yota? What are you smoking? In my wildest dreams my truck only hits 80 on the freeway.

DEADLYPEACE, 120 mph in a yota? What are you smoking? In my wildest dreams my truck only hits 80 on the freeway. If I didn't have a rev limiter I would have NO PROBLEM hitting those speeds I hit 106 half way through 4th and still pulling and have 5th left to go. But the damn rev limiter screws me up. This is done with low gear set and a smaller tire. I had 4.88 gears with 31"+ BFG's so called 33's tires NOW neither one of us is able to do this running true 33's or in DEADLY'S case 35's(he's also got 5.29 gears I believe) I can still get it around 100 mph. I have the 2.7 with 5sp manual.

As Hoodlum said this is done low gears and smaller tires, and yes I do have 5:29's. You bring me a set of 32's or smaller and I'll do again, but you'll have to paid for the ticket if one happen to come about.

a few years back i was running 38.5 boggers with 5:29's on my 4runner. i was able to get up to 84 on the speedo. with that gear and tire combo i was doing over 85mph and rode like a Cadillac. lets just say i was happy with yota. the motor has over 225,000 miles on it.

To clear the air for a daily driver on the interstate going 60+, performance wise it is better or worse to run 33's w/ 5.29's on an automatic?

Yes, 5.29 will do you just fine with an automatic.
