hello i have looked thru this site on gears alot (it kicks ass) tons of helpful stuff, but i am still confused on one thing. i have a 89 extended cab pu, 5 spd,22re running 33's. with a 4" procomp lift. my next project is to switch out gears. it will be a daily driver. i only do minor offroading 3-4 times a years and nothing major. i have added a lot of weight to it with the lift, tires, bumpers, winch. and i have done header, exhaust, cam, blackmagic fan....anyway whats gears are best for a daily driver? also i checked into a local 4wheel shop they want about 1700 bucks to change out gears...ouch. can i just change out the axle from a stock v6 auto? and is that a pain? how much should i expect to pay for someone to do it with quality parts. thanks everyone. also am i going to lose gas mileage?

Ok well for 33's everyone I know and must offroad sites well tell you to use 4.88's. You can 5.29's but you wont be able to hardly run highway speeds. Revs will be a lil high. 5.29's are for 35's and higher. I paid a offroad shop 1,200 to do 5.29's in my tacoma 1,700 sounds a bit steep. Gas mileage depends on how you drive the vehicle. I would think it would get better with the new gears. B/c it will take less pedal to go the speed your used to. Why would you want to swap in a stock axle? How is that going to help you?

well correct me if i am wrong but i thought some of the v6 autos came stock with 4.88 so i was thinking i could find one at a junk yard and it would be cheaper. i was also looking at 4.56. i definatly want to run highway speeds, also whats a good locker for a daily driver?

? are the v6 autos 4.88s? and also arnt they high pinion? and one thing that ive always wondered are the front and rear diffs interchangable. dont know very much about that stuff. Basicily could he or i for that matter go find 2 v6 aut third members and put it in my axles?

some v6 have 4.88s they are not high pinion. thats found in landcrusiers. the only downsize to using the 4.88s that come stock is that if you ever want to change gears or break one you have to find another 4.88 diff or you have to get a new diff thats non 4.88 and swap gears. also they dont make lockers and stuff for the stock 4.88 diffs.

with a solid axle truck you are able to put a rear diff in the front or a front diff in the rear
