i have a 2001 toyota tacoma with a 6 in lift and 35 in tires with the stock electronic locker in the rear. my question is what is the difference, (or advantage) between driving in 4 hi and 4 lo by themselves, and driving in 4 hi and 4 lo with the locker on. also is there a maximum speed at which on can travel with the rear locker engaged?

the difference is, 4 low utilizes a larger gear in the transfer case to give more torque. With the locker on, you get the same torque when in high and low 4 wheel drive, but you get the added traction of the locker. There is no maximum speed, but i would turn it off for a smoother highway ride.

I am no newer Tacoma expert, but I was under the impression that there are limitations as to when the locker could be engaged with those TRD's. You shouldn't drive on the road with 4 low engaged, use it for the trails only. If you use the locker on the street, the rear tires will turn at the same speed instead of the inside tire slowing down in a turn, you will put unnecessary wear on your rear end as well as your tires. If you have 4wd engaged on the street it will lock the front and rear axles together(I am almost positve this is how the late model toyota setup works, much like my 04 Durango), it will not allow them to speed up or slow down compared to each other thus wearing the transfercase and drivetrain especially during turns. If the terrain you are driving on is loose or slippery, it will not put as much stress on the drivetrain when the tires all try to rotate at the same speed. Please keep in mind that this is based on my general knowledge of how the transfercase and 4x4 system works, not vehicle specific so take it with a grain of salt.
