just bought another toyota. 1990 3.0L standard tranny SR5 ext cab msd ignition. it has 33's right now with a 4" procomp lift and first thing i wanna do is gear and lock it. but i was just wondering if i can tell if its already bin geard for the 33's without opening up the diffs. cause it seems to push the tires really well i get about 17 mpg and the speedo doesnt seem to be off. i was going to go to 4.88s. thanx

Jack up one tire if you have an open diff, or both tires if you have a working posi or locking differential. Put a reference mark on the tire and the driveshaft. Rotate the tire one full revolution for posis and lockers and 2 full revolutions for open diffs. Carefully count the number of full revolutions the driveshaft makes. This is your gear ratio. In other words, if the drive shaft turns 3 ¾ turns for one tire revolution, you probably have a 3.73 gear ratio.
Turning the tire for 2 full revolutions and dividing the drive shaft revolutions by two will give you a more accurate reading.
Your reading won't be exact, but it should be what's closest to the standard Toyota ratios of 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, or 4.88.
