Okay so the subject of gear-tire combos is beat to death.
I just picked up a 1994 with a 22re and 32's. it's got 4:10's and struggles up hills so I figure 4:56's would be a nice and practical solution.
simple enough..
heres the deal though- theres gotta be a better way to do this than dropping 1000 bucks and buying new ones.
can't you just go to a junkyard and buy the gears out of the differentials of some old yota? will 4.56's fit in whatever size axel stock 4.10's come in? gears can be swapped without changing the whole differential housing- right???

If you find a truck at a yard with the gear ratio you want, just swap the whole third member. Much simpler.

$1000 bucks for gears, where are you shopping? Is that including the installation. I got 4.88 gears for my front and year axle (85 toyota) with the install kits from Precision and it cost me about $400.

Problem is that Toyota came with 4:10 or 4:30 for autos...so it would be a exhausting search...
