I have a 2005 Quad With about 7" lift and running 35"s I posted a link to photos of it on this site. Anyways, I have started to get some noise and it is sounding like it is coming from the steering box. Has anyone heard of tundras Steering Boxes as having issues? I realize that the 35" tires I put on it with 20" X 10" rims probably did not help matters but I have not abused this truck and we are only talking about 6,000 miles on lift 14,000 total on truck. Any input? Thanks

I am pretty sure that the tundra runs a rack and pinion steering system. So it wouldn't be the box. I have not heard of the rack failing but I supose they could. Give more info like what kind of noise, when it happens, what kind of 7" lift are you talking about that sort of thing.
I bet the problem has to do with the tie rods or posibly a torn CV boot and it's the CV you hear grinding.

Not the CV’s. I know that for sure. It’s a popping when I turn, seems to do it under load. More of an inconsistent pop. When I brake, or turn. Right now I have Total Chaos upper control arms and Donahoe racing coilovers (gives almost 3”) , and this is stacked with 4.5” Tuff country lift.

It does not make the noise just driving straight down the road, even if you hit a bump. It only makes the pop when you turn, or put the brakes on and it is only one or two pops, if you where to park it and turn the steering wheel, it would pop when you crank it all the way over to the left or right but once it pops, it wont do it again until you drive it.

You prob have too much stress on the inner and outer tie rods. I may have a tacoma but I have had this problem there is too much stress and weight and you are poping the gears in the rack unit. Mine has done this a couple of times now it jumps a tooth and at some point when turning the opposite direction it will pop back and not to mention I have replaced a total of 5 cv boots now but then again I wheel the hell out of it.

Sounds like the CV joints are being stressed from the too great an angle they are working at due to too much lift.
